Biophysical Profile

The Biophysical Profile (pronunciation: bio-phys-i-cal pro-file) is a prenatal ultrasound evaluation used to check on a baby's well-being. The test is usually done in the third trimester of pregnancy.

Etymology

The term "Biophysical Profile" is derived from the words "bio" meaning life, "physical" referring to the body, and "profile" indicating a detailed description or analysis of something.

Procedure

The Biophysical Profile uses an ultrasound to measure the health of the fetus during pregnancy. It assesses five specific areas: fetal movement, fetal tone, fetal breathing, amniotic fluid volume, and fetal heart rate. Each of these areas is given a score of 0 or 2, with a total possible score of 10. A score of 8 to 10 is generally considered reassuring, while a lower score may indicate the need for further testing or intervention.

Related Terms

  • Ultrasound: A medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the internal structures of the body.
  • Amniotic Fluid: The fluid surrounding a fetus within the amniotic sac. It allows the fetus to move freely, provides a constant temperature, and cushions against physical injury.
  • Fetal Heart Rate: The heart rate of the fetus, typically measured in beats per minute. It can be an important indicator of fetal well-being.
  • Fetal Movement: The movement of a fetus inside the womb, often felt by the pregnant woman as "kicks" or "flutters."
  • Fetal Tone: The state of muscle tension in a fetus, which can be assessed through ultrasound.
  • Fetal Breathing: The practice of inhaling and exhaling by the fetus, which can be observed via ultrasound.
