Britain (BRIT-ən)
Britain (pronounced /ˈbrɪ.tən/) is a geographical and political term referring to the island of Great Britain, the largest island in the British Isles. The term is often used as a synonym for the United Kingdom, a sovereign state comprising England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Etymology
The term "Britain" is derived from the name of a Celtic tribe, the Britons, who inhabited the island. The name was later adopted by the Romans as "Britannia".
