Bruch's Membrane

Bruch's membrane (pronounced: brook's membrane), also known as the vitreous lamina or lamina vitrea, is a pentalaminar, thin, innermost layer of the choroid in the eye. It is named after the German anatomist, Karl von Bruch, who first described it in detail.

Etymology

The term "Bruch's membrane" is derived from the name of its discoverer, Karl von Bruch, a German anatomist. The term "membrane" is derived from the Latin word "membrana", which means a thin layer or sheet.

Structure

Bruch's membrane is a complex structure composed of five layers. These include the basement membrane of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), the inner collagenous layer, the elastic layer, the outer collagenous layer, and the basement membrane of the choriocapillaris.

Function

The primary function of Bruch's membrane is to act as a barrier and a conduit between the retina and the choroid. It allows nutrients to pass from the choroid to the retina and waste products to be removed from the retina to the choroid.

Related Terms

  • Choroid: The vascular layer of the eye, containing connective tissues, and lying between the retina and the sclera.
  • Retina: The light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the inner eye.
  • Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE): The pigmented cell layer just outside the neurosensory retina that nourishes retinal visual cells.
  • Choriocapillaris: The capillary layer of the choroid, located closest to the retina.

Pathology

Alterations or damage to Bruch's membrane can lead to several ocular diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), and choroidal neovascularization (CNV).
