The COVID-19 pandemic in Belize (pronunciation: /koʊvɪd naɪnˈtiːn pændɪmɪk ɪn bɪˈliːz/) refers to the ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), in the Central American country of Belize.

Etymology

The term "COVID-19" is derived from "Coronavirus Disease 2019," the year the disease was first identified. The term "pandemic" comes from the Greek words "pan," meaning "all," and "demos," meaning "people."

Background

COVID-19 was first identified in December 2019 in the city of Wuhan, Hubei province, China. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern regarding COVID-19 on 30 January 2020, and later declared a pandemic on 11 March 2020. As of [update], there have been confirmed cases and deaths in Belize due to the disease.
