Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK (pronounced: /ˈkænsər rɪˈsɜːrtʃ juːˈkeɪ/) is a cancer research and awareness charity in the United Kingdom, formed on 4 February 2002 by the merger of The Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. Its aim is to reduce the number of deaths from cancer. As the world's largest independent cancer research charity, it conducts research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Etymology

The name "Cancer Research UK" combines the terms "cancer", "research", and "UK". "Cancer" (from Latin cancer meaning "crab") refers to a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. "Research" (from Old French recercher meaning "to seek out") refers to the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources to establish facts and reach new conclusions. "UK" is an abbreviation for the "United Kingdom", the country where the organization is based.
