Chlorogenic Acid

Chlorogenic acid (pronunciation: klor-oh-JEN-ik AS-id) is a natural chemical compound which is the ester of caffeic acid and (-)-quinic acid. It is an important biomolecule found in a wide array of plants, including in high concentrations in coffee, and is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Etymology

The term "chlorogenic acid" comes from the Greek chloros meaning green and -genic meaning giving rise to. This is due to the green color produced when these compounds are oxidized.

Related Terms

  • Caffeic acid: An organic compound that is classified as a hydroxycinnamic acid. This acid is a major component of chlorogenic acid.
  • Quinic acid: A cyclohexanecarboxylic acid that is a constituent of the tannins and is involved in the biosynthesis of aromatic compounds in plants.
  • Antioxidant: A substance that inhibits oxidation, especially one used to counteract the deterioration of stored food products.
  • Anti-inflammatory: A substance that reduces inflammation or swelling.
  • Biomolecule: Any organic molecule that is an essential part of living organisms.

Uses

Chlorogenic acid has been marketed under various brand names as a weight loss supplement. However, the scientific evidence supporting these claims is generally poor. It has also been studied for its potential effects on Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Safety and Side Effects

While generally safe for consumption in moderate amounts, excessive intake of chlorogenic acid may lead to side effects such as anxiety, digestive problems, and high blood pressure. It may also interact with certain medications, including those for diabetes and blood pressure.
