Gender nonconforming (pronunciation: /ˈjendər nɒnkənˈfɔːmɪŋ/) is a term used to describe individuals whose gender expression does not align with societal expectations and norms related to their assigned sex at birth.

Etymology

The term "gender nonconforming" is a compound of the words "gender" and "nonconforming". "Gender" originates from the Old French gandre, meaning "kind, species; sex" and "nonconforming" is derived from the Latin non, meaning "not" and conformare, meaning "to shape, fashion, form".

Definition

Gender nonconforming individuals may identify and express themselves outside traditional gender norms associated with masculinity and femininity. This can include, but is not limited to, behaviors, clothing, hairstyles, activities, and interests. It is important to note that gender nonconformity is not synonymous with being transgender, although some transgender individuals may also identify as gender nonconforming.
