Genetic correlation

Genetic correlation (juh-net-ik kor-uh-lay-shun) is a term used in the field of Genetics to describe the proportion of variance that two traits share due to genetic causes, the correlation between the genetic influences on a trait and the genetic influences on a different trait estimating the degree of pleiotropy or causal overlap.

Etymology

The term "Genetic correlation" is derived from the English words "Genetic", meaning related to genes or heredity, and "Correlation", meaning a mutual relationship or connection between two or more things.

Definition

Genetic correlation is a parameter used in the study of Quantitative genetics. It is defined as the proportion of shared variance between two traits that is due to genetic causes. A genetic correlation of 1 indicates that the genetic influences on one trait are exactly the same as the genetic influences on another trait. A genetic correlation of 0 indicates that the genetic influences on the two traits are entirely independent.
