Hantaviridae

Hantaviridae (pronounced han-ta-vi-ruh-dee) is a family of viruses that are primarily carried by rodents and can cause various diseases in humans.

Etymology

The name "Hantaviridae" is derived from the Hantan River in South Korea, where the first strain of the virus, Hantaan virus, was isolated in the 1970s.

Diseases caused by Hantaviridae

Hantaviridae can cause two types of diseases in humans: Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). Both diseases are severe and can be fatal.

HPS is primarily found in the Americas and is carried by several types of rodents. Symptoms include fatigue, fever, and muscle aches, followed by shortness of breath and coughing as the lungs fill with fluid.

HFRS is found mainly in Europe and Asia and is also carried by rodents. Symptoms are similar to HPS but also include renal dysfunction and hemorrhaging.

Transmission

Hantaviridae are primarily transmitted to humans through contact with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. This can occur when these substances are stirred up into the air and inhaled, or when they are directly introduced into broken skin or the eyes, nose, or mouth. Transmission can also occur through a bite from an infected rodent.

Prevention

Prevention of Hantaviridae infection involves avoiding contact with rodents and taking precautions when cleaning areas where rodents have been present. This includes wearing gloves and masks, ventilating the area, and disinfecting surfaces.

Treatment

There is currently no specific treatment, cure, or vaccine for diseases caused by Hantaviridae. Treatment involves supportive care in a hospital, often including intubation and oxygen therapy to help with breathing.
