Lobes of Liver

The lobes of the liver are the distinct anatomical divisions of the liver in humans and other mammals. The liver is divided into four main lobes: the right lobe, the left lobe, the caudate lobe, and the quadrate lobe.

Pronunciation

  • Lobes of Liver: /ˈloʊbz ɒv ˈlɪvər/

Etymology

The term "lobe" originates from the Latin word "lobus", meaning a rounded projection or protuberance. The term "liver" is derived from the Old English "lifer", which is related to the Dutch "lever" and the German "Leber".

Right Lobe

The right lobe is the largest lobe of the liver. It is located on the right side of the body and is separated from the left lobe by the falciform ligament, a thin, crescent-shaped ligament that attaches the liver to the diaphragm and the anterior abdominal wall.

Left Lobe

The left lobe is smaller than the right lobe and is located on the left side of the body. It is separated from the right lobe by the falciform ligament.

Caudate Lobe

The caudate lobe is a small lobe located at the base of the liver. It is situated between the right lobe and the left lobe and is adjacent to the inferior vena cava, a large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower half of the body back to the heart.

Quadrate Lobe

The quadrate lobe is a small, square-shaped lobe located on the lower surface of the liver. It is situated between the left lobe and the gallbladder.
