Mestranol/noretynodrel

Mestranol/noretynodrel (pronunciation: mes-TRAN-ol/nor-ETH-ih-noe-drel) is a combination of two synthetic hormones, mestranol and noretynodrel, used in oral contraceptives.

Etymology

The term "mestranol" is derived from the chemical name 3-methoxy-17-ethynyl-1,3,5(10)-estratrien-17-ol. The term "noretynodrel" is derived from the chemical name 17α-ethynyl-19-nortestosterone.

Usage

Mestranol/noretynodrel is used as an oral contraceptive, a medication taken by mouth to prevent pregnancy. It works by preventing ovulation, altering the cervical mucus to make it difficult for sperm to reach the egg, and changing the lining of the uterus to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg.
