Normethandrone

Normethandrone, also known as methylestrenolone (pronunciation: nor-meth-an-drone), is a progestin medication which was previously used in Europe for the treatment of gynecological disorders but is now no longer marketed.

Etymology

The term "Normethandrone" is derived from the words "nor", indicating a modification in organic chemistry, and "methandrone", a term related to the drug's chemical structure.

Pharmacology

Normethandrone is a synthetic, steroidal progestin of the 19-nortestosterone group. It is an orally active progestogen. Unlike most other progestins, normethandrone is not a derivative of progesterone.

Medical Uses

Normethandrone was used for the treatment of various gynecological disorders such as menstrual disorders, endometriosis, and to help prevent threatened miscarriage. It was also used in combination with an estrogen as a component of menopausal hormone therapy.

Side Effects

Potential side effects of normethandrone include menstrual irregularities, nausea, breast tenderness, headache, and fluid retention. Long-term use of normethandrone may increase the risk of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease.
