William Louis Abbott (Template:IPA-en) was an American physician, naturalist, and explorer. His name is derived from the Old German name 'Willahelm', which is composed of the elements 'wil', meaning 'will or desire', and 'helm', meaning 'helmet or protection'. The surname 'Abbott' is of Old English origin, meaning 'priest'.
Early Life
Abbott was born on February 23, 1860, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of prominent sugar refiner Henry Abbott and his wife Mary Perkins Abbott. He attended the University of Pennsylvania where he studied medicine.
Career
After graduating, Abbott travelled extensively, collecting natural history specimens in Asia and the Indian Ocean region. He donated many of his collections to the Smithsonian Institution, contributing significantly to the institution's natural history collections.
Death
Abbott died on April 2, 1936, in Trenton, New Jersey. His contributions to the field of natural history and exploration continue to be recognized today.
