Abortion in India

Abortion (əˈbɔːrʃən) is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy. In India, it is legal under certain circumstances, as outlined in the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.

Etymology

The term "abortion" comes from the Latin abortio, which means "to produce prematurely". The term is used in medical contexts to refer to the premature termination of a pregnancy.

Legal Status

In India, the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1971 allows for abortions to be performed by registered medical practitioners under certain conditions. These conditions include risk to the life or physical or mental health of the woman, or if there is a substantial risk that the child, if born, would suffer from physical or mental abnormalities.

Procedure

The procedure for an abortion in India can vary depending on the stage of pregnancy. Early stage abortions, up to 12 weeks gestation, can be performed using medication (Medical abortion), while later stage abortions may require surgical intervention (Surgical abortion).
