Aerospace engineering is the primary field of engineering concerned with the development of aircraft and spacecraft. It has two major and overlapping branches: Aeronautical engineering and Astronautical engineering. Aeronautical engineering focuses on the theory, technology, and practice of flight within the Earth's atmosphere, while Astronautical engineering covers the science and technology of space travel and exploration.
Overview
Aerospace engineering deals with the design, construction, and study of the science behind the forces and physical properties of aircraft, rockets, and spacecraft. The field also covers their aerodynamic characteristics and behaviors, airfoil, control surfaces, lift, drag, and other properties. It is one of the most challenging branches of engineering because it requires a combination of both engineering and scientific skills to develop technologies and solutions that are not only innovative but also reliable and efficient for the operation in the extreme environment of space.
History
The history of aerospace engineering can be traced back to the early 20th century with the first powered flight by the Wright brothers in 1903. Since then, the field has seen significant advancements, including the development of jet engines, supersonic and hypersonic flight, and the entry into space with the launch of Sputnik by the Soviet Union in 1957, followed by the first human in space, Yuri Gagarin, in 1961. The Apollo program, which culminated in landing humans on the Moon, and the development of the Space Shuttle, are also significant milestones in the field.
Education and Training
A career in aerospace engineering requires at least a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering or another related field of engineering or science. Higher degrees, such as a master's or a Ph.D., are often required for advanced positions, research roles, or teaching positions at universities. The curriculum typically includes courses in physics, mathematics, project management, design, and specific aerospace engineering topics such as aerodynamics, aircraft structures, propulsion, and avionics.
Sub-disciplines
Aerospace engineering is divided into a number of sub-disciplines, including but not limited to:
- Aerodynamics – the study of air flow around objects such as aircraft wings or spacecraft bodies.
- Structural analysis – the examination of the physical integrity and endurance of aircraft and spacecraft structures.
- Propulsion – the study of how to move an aircraft or spacecraft, including the study of engines and propellants.
- Avionics – the design and programming of computer systems on board an aircraft or spacecraft.
- Materials science – the study of materials with specific properties that make them suitable for aerospace use, such as lightness, strength, and resistance to extreme temperatures.
Careers
Aerospace engineers may specialize in a particular area of aerospace engineering, such as propulsion systems, structural design, navigation systems, and production methods. They often work in teams to design, build, test, and analyze their projects. Employment opportunities exist in government agencies, such as NASA and the Department of Defense, as well as in private sector companies that produce aircraft, spacecraft, and related systems.
Challenges and Future Directions
The aerospace industry continues to face challenges such as reducing the environmental impact of air travel, improving the safety and reliability of aircraft, and reducing costs.
