Aircraft

Aircraft (pronunciation: /ˈeərkraft/) is a vehicle that is able to fly by gaining support from the air, or, in general, the atmosphere of a planet. It counters the force of gravity by using either static lift or by using the dynamic lift of an airfoil, or in a few cases the downward thrust from jet engines.

Etymology

The word "aircraft" is derived from the Greek word "aer" meaning "air" and the Latin word "craft" meaning "skill or ability". It was first used in the late 19th century and originally referred to any kind of "craft" that could navigate through the air.

Types of Aircraft

There are several types of aircraft, including airplanes, helicopters, gliders, airships, and drones. Each type of aircraft has its own specific design and purpose.

  • Airplane: A powered flying vehicle with fixed wings and a weight greater than that of the air it displaces.
  • Helicopter: A type of rotorcraft in which lift and thrust are supplied by rotors.
  • Glider: A lighter-than-air aircraft that is designed to glide after being towed aloft or launched from a catapult.
  • Airship: A power-driven aircraft kept buoyant by a body of gas (usually helium) which is lighter than air.
  • Drone: An unmanned aircraft or ship guided by remote control or onboard computers.

Related Terms

  • Aerodynamics: The study of the properties of moving air, and especially of the interaction between the air and solid bodies moving through it.
  • Aeronautics: The science or art involved with the study, design, and manufacturing of air flight–capable machines, and the techniques of operating aircraft and rockets within the atmosphere.
  • Aviation: The activities or practices of flying aircraft.
