Affiliation

Affiliation (/əˌfɪliˈeɪʃ(ə)n/), from the Latin affiliare meaning "to adopt", is a term used in many contexts in the medical field. It often refers to the connection or association between health professionals, medical institutions, or research organizations.

Medical Affiliation

In the context of medicine, an affiliation is a formal connection between a doctor or a medical researcher and a hospital, university, or other professional entity. This relationship often involves shared resources, collaborative research, and mutual support in providing medical services.

For example, a doctor may have an affiliation with a specific hospital where they have admitting privileges, or a researcher may be affiliated with a university where they conduct their studies.

Health Care Affiliation

In health care, an affiliation can also refer to the relationship between a patient and their primary care provider or the health care system at large. This can include the patient's enrollment in a specific health plan, their registration with a particular doctor's office, or their membership in a health maintenance organization (HMO).

Affiliation Agreements

In some cases, affiliations are formalized through affiliation agreements. These are legal contracts that outline the terms of the relationship between the affiliated parties, including their respective rights and responsibilities. Affiliation agreements are common in the health care industry, particularly in situations where hospitals or health systems are partnering with smaller clinics or individual practitioners.
