Al Gore

Albert Arnold Gore Jr. (born March 31, 1948) is an American politician and environmentalist who served as the 45th Vice President of the United States from 1993 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton. He was the Democratic Party's nominee for President of the United States in the 2000 election.

Early Life and Education

Al Gore was born in Washington, D.C., the second of two children of Albert Gore Sr., a U.S. Representative and Senator from Tennessee, and Pauline LaFon Gore, one of the first women to graduate from Vanderbilt University Law School.

Gore attended Harvard University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in government in 1969. During his time at Harvard, he was roommates with actor Tommy Lee Jones.

Military Service

After graduating from Harvard, Gore enlisted in the United States Army in August 1969. He served as a military journalist in Vietnam from 1971 to 1972.

Political Career

U.S. House of Representatives

Gore was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1976, representing Tennessee's 4th congressional district. He served four terms in the House.

U.S. Senate

In 1984, Gore was elected to the United States Senate, where he served until he became Vice President in 1993.

Vice Presidency

Gore was elected Vice President in 1992 and served two terms under President Bill Clinton. During his tenure, he was an advocate for environmental issues and technology initiatives.

2000 Presidential Election

Gore was the Democratic nominee for President in the 2000 election. The election was one of the closest in U.S. history and was decided by a Supreme Court decision in Bush v. Gore, which awarded the presidency to George W. Bush.

Environmental Activism

After leaving office, Gore became a prominent environmental activist. He is known for his work on climate change, including the documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Personal Life

Gore married Mary Elizabeth "Tipper" Aitcheson in 1970, and they have four children. The couple separated in 2010.
