Alka-Seltzer

Alka-Seltzer (/ˈælkə ˈsɛltsər/) is an over-the-counter drug that provides symptomatic relief of minor aches, pains, inflammation, fever, headache, heartburn, stomachache, indigestion, acid reflux and hangovers, while neutralizing excess stomach acid.

Etymology

The name "Alka-Seltzer" is derived from its alkaline properties (Alka) and the effervescent agent used in its formulation (Seltzer).

Composition

Alka-Seltzer is composed of three main ingredients: aspirin, sodium bicarbonate, and citric acid. Aspirin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that relieves pain and inflammation. Sodium bicarbonate and citric acid react with water to create effervescence, and also help to neutralize stomach acid.

Usage

Alka-Seltzer is typically dissolved in a glass of water and ingested orally. The effervescence that occurs when the tablet is dissolved in water helps to quickly distribute the medication throughout the body.
