Apple of Discord
Apple of Discord
The Apple of Discord is a pivotal element in Greek mythology, often associated with the events leading to the Trojan War. It is a symbol of strife and discord, famously introduced by the goddess Eris, the goddess of discord.
Mythological Background
The story of the Apple of Discord begins with the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, the parents of Achilles. All the gods and goddesses were invited to the celebration, except for Eris. In retaliation for being excluded, Eris threw a golden apple into the midst of the festivities, inscribed with the words "To the fairest." This act was intended to sow discord among the goddesses present.
The Judgement of Paris
The golden apple was claimed by three goddesses: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Unable to decide among themselves who deserved the apple, they turned to Zeus for a decision. Zeus, unwilling to favor any of the goddesses, appointed Paris of Troy as the judge.
Each goddess attempted to bribe Paris with tempting offers. Hera promised him power and kingship, Athena offered wisdom and skill in war, and Aphrodite promised him the love of the most beautiful mortal woman, Helen of Sparta. Paris awarded the apple to Aphrodite, setting in motion the events that would lead to the Trojan War.
Significance in Greek Mythology
The Apple of Discord is emblematic of the themes of jealousy, competition, and the far-reaching consequences of seemingly small actions. It highlights the interplay between divine and mortal affairs in Greek mythology, illustrating how the whims of the gods could have profound impacts on human lives.
Cultural Impact
The phrase "apple of discord" has entered the lexicon as a metaphor for any object or issue that causes strife and conflict. It is often used in literature and popular culture to describe situations where a seemingly minor issue leads to significant discord.
