Athens (Medicine)

Athens (pronunciation: /ˈæθɪnz/; Greek: Αθήνα, Athína; Ancient Greek: Ἀθῆναι, Athênai) is not only the capital city of Greece, but also has a significant place in the field of medicine. The city is named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom, who was also considered the patron of health and medicine in ancient Greek mythology.

Etymology

The name Athens is derived from the goddess Athena, who was the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. The city was named after her because she was considered the patron of the city.

Medical Significance

In ancient times, Athens was a hub for medical knowledge and practice. The famous physician Hippocrates, often referred to as the "Father of Medicine", was born in Greece and his teachings were widely followed in Athens. The Hippocratic Oath, which is still used by doctors today, originated in Greece.

Athens was also home to the Asclepieion, an ancient Greek healing temple, dedicated to Asclepius, the god of medicine. These temples were the earliest known hospitals where patients would come to be healed.
