It is one of the oldest Division I collegiate athletic conferences in the United States, with origins dating back to 1896 when it was established as the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives. The conference is part of the NCAA Division I, and its members compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest level of NCAA football in the United States.

History

The Big Ten Conference was founded in 1896 with the aim of regulating intercollegiate athletics.
