C-Jun (pronounced see-jun) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the JUN gene. It is a component of the transcription factor complex AP-1 and has a central role in cell proliferation, apoptosis, and oncogenesis.
Etymology
The name C-Jun is derived from the Japanese word jun, which means "pure". The "C" in C-Jun stands for "cellular", distinguishing it from its viral counterpart, v-Jun.
Function
C-Jun forms a dimer with c-Fos in order to create the transcription factor complex AP-1. This complex binds to DNA and regulates gene expression, which in turn controls processes such as cell proliferation and apoptosis.
