Centpropazine
Centpropazine
Centpropazine is a pharmaceutical drug that acts as an antidepressant. It belongs to the class of drugs known as serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), which are used to treat major depressive disorder and other mood disorders by increasing the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain.
Mechanism of Action
Centpropazine works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, two important neurotransmitters involved in mood regulation. By preventing their reabsorption into the presynaptic neuron, centpropazine increases the availability of these neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft, thereby enhancing neurotransmission and improving mood.
Pharmacokinetics
Centpropazine is administered orally and is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. It undergoes hepatic metabolism and is primarily excreted via the renal system. The drug has a half-life that allows for once-daily dosing, which can improve patient compliance.
Clinical Uses
Centpropazine is primarily used in the treatment of major depressive disorder. It may also be prescribed for other conditions such as anxiety disorders and chronic pain, where modulation of serotonin and norepinephrine can be beneficial.
Side Effects
Common side effects of centpropazine include nausea, dry mouth, dizziness, and insomnia. More serious side effects can include hypertension, tachycardia, and an increased risk of suicidal thoughts in young adults.
Contraindications
Centpropazine should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the drug. It is also contraindicated in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) due to the risk of serotonin syndrome.
Drug Interactions
Centpropazine can interact with other medications that affect serotonin levels, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Caution is advised when combining these medications.
