Cerebral Hemorrhage

Cerebral Hemorrhage (pronounced: /səˈriːbrəl ˈhɛmərɪdʒ/) is a type of intracranial bleeding that occurs within the brain tissue or ventricles. It can result from a brain injury or from a weakening of the blood vessels in the brain.

Etymology

The term "Cerebral Hemorrhage" is derived from the Latin word "cerebrum" meaning brain, and the Greek word "haima" meaning blood, and "rhegnumai" meaning to break.

Types

There are several types of cerebral hemorrhages, including:

  • Intracerebral Hemorrhage: This occurs when a blood vessel within the brain bursts, allowing blood to leak inside the brain.
  • Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: This type of hemorrhage happens when there's bleeding in the space between your brain and the surrounding membrane.
  • Epidural Hematoma: This is when bleeding occurs between the outer layer of the brain and the skull.
  • Subdural Hematoma: This is when bleeding occurs between the brain and its outermost covering.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a cerebral hemorrhage can vary depending on the location of the bleed and the amount of brain tissue affected. Symptoms may include sudden tingling, weakness, numbness, or paralysis of the face, arm, or leg, particularly on one side of the body. Other symptoms may include trouble with speaking or understanding speech, difficulty seeing in one or both eyes, and problems with walking or balance.

Causes

Cerebral hemorrhage can be caused by a number of conditions that affect the blood vessels, including hypertension (high blood pressure), aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and cerebral amyloid angiopathy. It can also be caused by head trauma.

Treatment

Treatment for cerebral hemorrhage includes emergency measures to control bleeding and reduce pressure in the brain. Surgery may also be needed to alleviate swelling and prevent further bleeding. Medications may be used to control other symptoms.
