The Chicago White Sox are a professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central Division. The White Sox are one of two MLB teams based in Chicago, the other being the Chicago Cubs of the National League (NL) Central Division.
History
The team was established as a major league franchise in 1900. The White Sox were originally known as the Chicago White Stockings, but the name was shortened to White Sox in 1904. The team has won three World Series titles, in 1906, 1917, and 2005.
Early Years
The White Sox were one of the eight charter franchises of the American League, which was established in 1901. The team played its home games at South Side Park before moving to Comiskey Park in 1910. The White Sox won their first World Series in 1906, defeating the crosstown rival Chicago Cubs.
The Black Sox Scandal
The White Sox were involved in one of the most infamous scandals in baseball history, known as the Black Sox Scandal. In the 1919 World Series, eight White Sox players were accused of intentionally losing games in exchange for money from gamblers. The players were banned from baseball for life.
Modern Era
The White Sox moved to their current home, Guaranteed Rate Field, in 1991. The team won their most recent World Series in 2005, breaking an 88-year championship drought. The 2005 team was managed by Ozzie Guillén and featured key players such as Paul Konerko, Mark Buehrle, and Jermaine Dye.
Ballpark
The White Sox currently play their home games at Guaranteed Rate Field, located on the South Side of Chicago. The ballpark opened in 1991 and replaced the original Comiskey Park, which had been the team's home since 1910.
Mascot
The team's mascot is Southpaw, a fuzzy green creature who entertains fans at home games and makes public appearances on behalf of the team.
