Convolvulus scammonia is a species of flowering plant in the morning glory family, Convolvulaceae. It is native to the Eastern Mediterranean region, including countries such as Turkey, Syria, and Greece. The plant is known for its medicinal properties and has been used historically as a purgative.

Description

Convolvulus scammonia is a perennial herbaceous plant with twining stems that can grow up to 2-3 meters in length. The leaves are heart-shaped and the flowers are funnel-shaped, typically white or pale pink. The plant produces a milky latex that is harvested for its medicinal properties.

Habitat

This species thrives in dry, rocky soils and is commonly found in scrubland, grassland, and open woodland areas. It prefers full sunlight and can tolerate drought conditions.

Medicinal Uses

The latex of Convolvulus scammonia, known as scammony, has been used since ancient times as a powerful laxative. The active compound in the latex is scammonin, which stimulates the bowel and promotes defecation. However, due to its potency, it must be used with caution to avoid severe gastrointestinal irritation.

Cultivation

Convolvulus scammonia can be propagated from seeds or cuttings. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny location. The plant is relatively low-maintenance but should be protected from excessive moisture to prevent root rot.

Conservation Status

The conservation status of Convolvulus scammonia has not been extensively studied, but it is not currently listed as a threatened species. However, habitat destruction and overharvesting for medicinal use could potentially impact its populations.

Related Species

Convolvulus scammonia is related to other species in the Convolvulus genus, such as Convolvulus arvensis (field bindweed) and Convolvulus tricolor (dwarf morning glory).
