Deity

Deity (/ˈdiːɪti/; from Latin deus, "god") is a preternatural or supernatural being, who is also considered divine or sacred. The Oxford Dictionary of English defines deity as "a god or goddess (in a polytheistic religion)", or anything revered as divine.

Etymology

The word deity derives from the Latin word deus, which means "god". The Indo-European root dyeu- also means "to shine", and it is the source of many words for "sky", "day", and "god" in various languages.
