Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos are a professional American football team based in Denver, Colorado. They are a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) West division in the National Football League (NFL). The team was established in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL) and joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.
History
The Denver Broncos were founded by Bob Howsam and began play in 1960 as part of the AFL. Initially, the team struggled, failing to record a winning season until 1973. The Broncos' fortunes changed with the arrival of head coach Red Miller and quarterback Craig Morton, leading to their first Super Bowl appearance in 1977.
Super Bowl Appearances
The Broncos have appeared in eight Super Bowls, winning three. Their first two victories came in the late 1990s under the leadership of head coach Mike Shanahan and quarterback John Elway. The team won Super Bowl XXXII in 1997 and Super Bowl XXXIII in 1998. The Broncos' most recent Super Bowl victory was in 2015, when they defeated the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50.
Stadium
The Broncos play their home games at Empower Field at Mile High, which opened in 2001. The stadium is known for its high altitude, which can be challenging for visiting teams. The original Mile High Stadium was the team's home from 1960 to 2000.
Rivalries
The Broncos have several notable rivalries, particularly with their AFC West opponents. Their fiercest rivalry is with the Oakland Raiders, now known as the Las Vegas Raiders. Other significant rivalries include those with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers.
Notable Players
The Broncos have had numerous Hall of Fame players, including:
- John Elway - Quarterback, played from 1983 to 1998, led the team to two Super Bowl victories.
- Shannon Sharpe - Tight end, known for his receiving skills and leadership.
- Terrell Davis - Running back, MVP of Super Bowl XXXII.
- Peyton Manning - Quarterback, led the team to victory in Super Bowl 50.
