Diclofenac/Misoprostol

Diclofenac/Misoprostol (pronunciation: dye-KLOE-fen-ak/mi-SO-prost-ol) is a combination medication used to treat arthritis symptoms while reducing the risk of developing ulcers in the stomach or intestines.

Etymology

The term Diclofenac is derived from its chemical name: 2-(2,6-dichloranilino) phenylacetic acid. Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analogue, hence the name.

Usage

Diclofenac/Misoprostol is used to relieve symptoms such as pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis. Misoprostol protects the stomach from diclofenac's irritating effects. This combination medication is used in people who have an increased risk for stomach/intestinal ulcers and in people who have a high risk of developing stomach/intestinal ulcers from using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Related Terms

  • Arthritis: A group of diseases characterized by inflammation of the joints.
  • Ulcer: A sore that develops on the skin or mucous membranes.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): A class of drugs that provides analgesic and antipyretic effects, and, in higher doses, anti-inflammatory effects.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Diclofenac/Misoprostol include nausea, stomach pain, gas, diarrhea, constipation, and heartburn. Serious side effects include stomach/intestinal bleeding or blockage, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and kidney problems.

Precautions

Before taking Diclofenac/Misoprostol, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to either of the drugs; or to aspirin or other NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib); or to other prostaglandins; or if you have any other allergies.
