Encaprin

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Encaprin is an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is commonly used to relieve minor aches and pains, as well as to reduce fever. It is also used in the treatment of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus.

Pharmacology

Encaprin works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, chemicals that the body produces in response to injury or illness. Prostaglandins cause pain and inflammation. By reducing their production, Encaprin helps to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.

Uses

Encaprin is used to treat a variety of conditions:

  • Pain: Encaprin is effective in relieving minor aches and pains caused by headache, toothache, backache, menstrual cramps, arthritis, or a cold.
  • Fever: Encaprin can also lower a fever.
  • Inflammatory diseases: Encaprin can be used to manage the symptoms of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Side Effects

Like all NSAIDs, Encaprin can cause side effects. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal in nature, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach upset. In rare cases, Encaprin can cause serious side effects like heart attack or stroke, especially if used long-term or in high doses.

Precautions

Before using Encaprin, individuals should inform their healthcare provider if they have a history of allergy to aspirin or other NSAIDs, asthma, blood disorders, nasal polyps, liver disease, kidney disease, or heart disease.

Interactions

Encaprin may interact with other medications, including anticoagulants like warfarin, corticosteroids, antihypertensives, and other NSAIDs. It is important to inform the healthcare provider of all the medications being taken to avoid potential interactions.
