History
Gettysburg College was founded by Samuel Simon Schmucker, a prominent Lutheran theologian, in 1832. The college was originally named Pennsylvania College of Gettysburg. Schmucker's vision was to create an institution that combined rigorous academics with a strong moral foundation.
During the American Civil War, the college's Pennsylvania Hall was used as a hospital for both Union and Confederate soldiers. The college's proximity to the Gettysburg National Military Park has made it a site of historical interest.
