Golders Green
Golders Green is an area in the London Borough of Barnet in England. It is located approximately 5.5 miles (8.9 km) northwest of Charing Cross. The area is particularly known for its substantial Jewish population.
History
Golders Green was originally a small hamlet in the parish of Hendon, situated on the North End Road (now Golders Green Road). The name 'Golders' comes from a family named Godyere who lived in the area, and 'Green' alludes to the manorial waste on which the settlement was built.
Demographics
Golders Green is known for its rich cultural diversity. The area has a significant Jewish community, and is also home to a number of other ethnic groups, including those of Asian and Eastern European descent.
Landmarks
One of the most notable landmarks in Golders Green is the Golders Green Hippodrome, an entertainment venue built in 1913. Another significant landmark is the Golders Green Crematorium, which is considered the first crematorium in London.
Transport
Golders Green is served by Golders Green tube station, which is on the Northern Line of the London Underground. There are also numerous bus services that operate in the area.
Education
There are several schools in Golders Green, including the Menorah High School for Girls and the St Mary's and St John's CE School. The area is also home to the London Jewish Cultural Centre, which offers a range of educational and cultural programmes.
Religion
Golders Green is known for its many synagogues, including the Golders Green Synagogue and the Machzike Hadath Synagogue. There are also a number of churches in the area, such as St. Edward the Confessor Church and Golders Green Parish Church.
