A Health Club (pronunciation: /ˈhɛlθ klʌb/), also known as a Fitness Center or Gym, is a place that houses exercise equipment for the purpose of physical exercise.

Etymology

The term "Health Club" is derived from the mid-19th century English language. "Health" comes from the Old English word "hǣlth", which has the base meaning of "wholeness, a being whole, sound or well." The word "Club" in this context, originated from the Old Norse word "klubba" meaning "cudgel" or "club". In the late 17th century, a club refers to a public room where people meet for social and recreational activities, which is similar to the modern-day usage of the term in "Health Club".
