June Kathleen Lloyd, Baroness Lloyd of Highbury (1 January 1928 – 28 June 2006) was a prominent British paediatrician and a life peer in the House of Lords. She was renowned for her contributions to the field of paediatrics, particularly in the areas of metabolic disorders and child health.

Early Life and Education

June Lloyd was born in London, England. She attended King's College London where she studied medicine, graduating with a degree in 1950. Her early interest in paediatrics led her to pursue further training in this specialty.

Medical Career

Lloyd's medical career began at the Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she developed a keen interest in metabolic disorders in children. Her research in this area was groundbreaking, particularly her work on inborn errors of metabolism.

In 1975, she was appointed as the first female professor of paediatrics at St George's, University of London. Her tenure there was marked by significant advancements in paediatric care and research.

Contributions to Paediatrics

Baroness Lloyd's work in paediatrics extended beyond clinical practice. She was instrumental in establishing protocols for the early detection and management of metabolic disorders in children. Her research contributed to the understanding of conditions such as phenylketonuria and galactosaemia.

Honors and Peerage

In recognition of her contributions to medicine, June Lloyd was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1990. In 1996, she was elevated to the peerage as Baroness Lloyd of Highbury, of Highbury in the London Borough of Islington.
