Kakheti (Georgian: კახეთი
) is a region located in eastern Georgia, known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and significant contributions to the country's wine industry. The region is bordered by the Greater Caucasus mountain range to the north and the Iori River to the south.
History
Kakheti has a long and storied history, dating back to ancient times. It was an important part of the Kingdom of Iberia and later became a separate kingdom in the early medieval period. The region played a crucial role in the unification of Georgia under the Bagrationi dynasty.
In the 17th century, Kakheti was invaded by the Safavid Empire, leading to significant cultural and demographic changes. Despite these challenges, the region maintained its distinct identity and continued to be a center of Georgian culture and politics.

The economy of Kakheti is primarily based on agriculture, with viticulture being the most prominent sector. The region is renowned for its wine production, with several indigenous grape varieties such as Saperavi and Rkatsiteli. Kakheti is often referred to as the "wine region" of Georgia, and its wines are celebrated both domestically and internationally.
In addition to wine, Kakheti produces a variety of agricultural products, including grains, fruits, and vegetables. The region is also developing its tourism industry, attracting visitors with its historical sites, natural beauty, and cultural festivals.
Culture
Kakheti is a cultural heartland of Georgia, with a rich tradition of music, dance, and art. The region is home to several important historical and religious sites, including the Alaverdi Monastery, the Gremi complex, and the David Gareja Monastery Complex.
