King George County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 26,923. Its county seat is the town of King George.
History
King George County was established in 1720 from the northern part of Richmond County. It was named for King George I of Great Britain. The county has a rich history, including its role in the American Civil War and its proximity to the nation's capital, Washington, D.C..
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 188 square miles (490 km²), of which 180 square miles (470 km²) is land and 8 square miles (21 km²) (4.3%) is water. The county is bordered by the Potomac River to the north and the Rappahannock River to the south.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 26,923 people, 9,623 households, and 7,123 families residing in the county. The population density was 149 people per square mile (58/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 75.6% White, 16.2% African American, 1.1% Native American, 2.3% Asian, and 4.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.6% of the population.
Government and Politics
King George County is governed by a Board of Supervisors, which consists of five members elected from single-member districts. The county is part of Virginia's 1st congressional district.
Education
The county is served by the King George County Schools system, which includes King George High School, King George Middle School, and several elementary schools.
Economy
The economy of King George County is diverse, with significant employment in government, education, and retail sectors. The county is also home to the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, a major research and development center for the United States Navy.
Transportation
Major highways in the county include U.S. Route 301 and Virginia State Route 3. The county is also served by several secondary roads that connect it to neighboring counties and regions.
Notable People
- James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, was born in King George County.
- William Fitzhugh, a prominent colonial planter and politician, resided in the county.
