LGBTQ (pronounced: el-jee-bee-tee-kyoo) is an acronym that stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer or Questioning. The term is used to describe a community of individuals who identify as non-heterosexual or non-cisgender.
Etymology
The term LGBTQ has evolved over time as understanding and acceptance of different sexual orientations and gender identities have grown. The initialism has been in use since the 1990s, with the 'Q' added more recently to include those who identify as queer or are questioning their sexual identity.
