La Liga
La Liga
La Liga, officially known as LaLiga Santander for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional football division of the Spanish football league system. It is contested by 20 teams, with the three lowest-placed teams relegated to the Segunda División and replaced by the top three teams in that division. La Liga is one of the most popular professional sports leagues in the world, with an average attendance of 26,933 for league matches in the 2018–19 season. This is the eighth-highest of any domestic professional sports league in the world and the third-highest of any professional association football league in the world, behind the Bundesliga and the Premier League.
History
La Liga was founded in 1929, with FC Barcelona winning the inaugural title. Since its inception, a total of 62 teams have competed in La Liga. Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona have dominated the league, winning the majority of the titles. Real Madrid has won the most titles, with 34 as of the 2020–21 season, followed by Barcelona with 26 titles.
Competition format
The competition format follows a double round-robin system, where each team plays every other team twice, once at home and once away. Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned the champion. If points are equal, the head-to-head results between the tied teams determine the winner.
Qualification for European competitions
The top four teams in La Liga qualify for the UEFA Champions League, with the top three entering the group stage directly and the fourth entering the playoff round. The fifth-placed team qualifies for the UEFA Europa League, and the sixth-placed team may also qualify depending on the winner of the Copa del Rey.
