Lawrence A. Tabak
Lawrence A. Tabak is a distinguished biomedical researcher and public health advocate, currently serving as the Principal Deputy Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Early Life and Education
Lawrence A. Tabak was born in New York City. He completed his undergraduate studies at the City College of New York, where he majored in chemistry. He then pursued his dental education at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, earning his DDS degree. Following this, he completed a PhD in biochemistry at the University of Buffalo.
Career
Tabak began his career as a researcher at the University of Rochester, where he focused on the field of glycobiology. His research has significantly advanced our understanding of the role of glycans in health and disease.
In 2000, Tabak joined the NIH as the Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). During his tenure, he championed the importance of oral health and its impact on overall health.
In 2010, he was appointed as the Principal Deputy Director of NIH, a role in which he continues to serve. In this position, he oversees the agency's efforts in biomedical research, with a particular focus on promoting translational and clinical research.
