Melanocortin 3 receptor
The Melanocortin 3 receptor (MC3R) is a G protein-coupled receptor that is encoded by the MC3R gene in humans. It is one of the five melanocortin receptors and is primarily expressed in the central nervous system.
Function
The MC3R is involved in the regulation of energy homeostasis, feeding behavior, and body weight. It is activated by melanocortin peptides, including alpha-MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone) and ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone). The receptor plays a role in the modulation of inflammatory responses and cardiovascular function.
Clinical Significance
Mutations in the MC3R gene have been associated with obesity and metabolic disorders. Research suggests that the MC3R may influence insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.
Ligands
MC3R has several known ligands, including both agonists and antagonists. Agonists such as alpha-MSH and gamma-MSH activate the receptor, while antagonists can inhibit its activity. The development of selective MC3R ligands is of interest for potential therapeutic applications in treating obesity and metabolic diseases.
