The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) is one of the 27 institutes and centers of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It was established to lead scientific research to improve minority health and eliminate health disparities. NIMHD conducts and supports research, training, and dissemination of information to improve the health of racial and ethnic minority populations and reduce health disparities.
History
NIMHD was originally established as the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) in 2000 by the United States Congress. It was elevated to an institute in 2010, reflecting its expanded role in addressing health disparities.
Mission
The mission of NIMHD is to lead scientific research to improve minority health and eliminate health disparities. This includes:
- Conducting and supporting research on minority health and health disparities.
- Promoting the training of a diverse research workforce.
- Disseminating information to improve public health.
