Ziertabak

Nicotiana sylvestris is a species of flowering plant in the family Solanaceae, commonly known as the woodland tobacco or South American tobacco. It is native to the forests of Argentina and is cultivated for its ornamental value and its use in the production of tobacco.

Description

Nicotiana sylvestris is a tall, herbaceous plant that can grow up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in height. The plant has large, lance-shaped leaves that can reach up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length. The leaves are sticky and covered with fine hairs. The flowers are tubular, white, and fragrant, typically blooming in the summer. The flowers are arranged in loose clusters and are known to attract pollinators such as moths.

Cultivation

Nicotiana sylvestris is grown as an ornamental plant in gardens and landscapes. It prefers well-drained soil and a sunny to partially shaded location. The plant is relatively easy to grow from seed and can be started indoors before the last frost or sown directly in the garden. It requires regular watering, especially during dry periods, and benefits from occasional feeding with a balanced fertilizer.

Uses

While Nicotiana sylvestris is primarily grown for its ornamental value, it is also used in the production of tobacco. The leaves contain nicotine, an alkaloid that is used in the manufacture of cigarettes and other tobacco products. However, it is not as commonly used for commercial tobacco production as other species such as Nicotiana tabacum.

Toxicity

All parts of Nicotiana sylvestris are toxic if ingested due to the presence of nicotine. The plant can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and dizziness if consumed. It is important to handle the plant with care and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
