Odisha

Odisha (pronunciation: /ɒˈrɪsə/), also known as Orissa, is an Indian state located in the eastern part of the country. It is surrounded by the states of West Bengal to the north-east, Jharkhand to the north, Chhattisgarh to the west and north-west, and Andhra Pradesh to the south. Odisha has a coastline of 485 kilometres (301 mi) along the Bay of Bengal.

Etymology

The term "Odisha" is derived from the ancient Prakrit word "Odda Visaya" as in the Tirumalai inscription of Rajendra Chola I, which is dated to 1025. "Odda Visaya" or "Odra Visaya" that was used in ancient times is synonymous with the modern term Odisha.
