Ovarian Cyst

An Ovarian Cyst (/oʊˈvɛəriən sɪst/) is a fluid-filled sac that forms on or inside an ovary.

Etymology

The term "Ovarian Cyst" is derived from the Latin ovarium meaning "egg" or "nut", and the Greek kystis meaning "bladder" or "pouch".

Definition

An Ovarian Cyst is a common occurrence in women during their reproductive years. They are typically harmless and often go unnoticed unless they grow large, cause discomfort, or lead to complications such as ovarian torsion or rupture.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

There are several types of ovarian cysts, including:

  • Follicular cyst: This type of cyst forms when the follicle does not release its egg, and the follicle continues to grow.
  • Corpus luteum cyst: This type of cyst forms if the follicle does not dissolve after releasing its egg and instead seals off and fluid accumulates inside.
  • Dermoid cyst: These cysts contain different types of tissues, such as hair, skin, or teeth, as they form from embryonic cells.
  • Cystadenomas: These cysts form on the surface of the ovary and are often filled with a watery or mucus-like substance.
  • Endometriomas: These cysts develop in women who have endometriosis, a condition where the tissue from the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus.

Symptoms

Symptoms of an ovarian cyst can include pelvic pain, bloating, swelling, or a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen. However, many ovarian cysts do not cause any symptoms and are often discovered during a routine pelvic examination.

Treatment

Treatment for an ovarian cyst depends on the size and type of the cyst, as well as the patient's age, symptoms, and overall health. Options can include watchful waiting, medication, or surgery.
