Parametrium

Parametrium (pronunciation: /pærəˈmiːtrɪəm/) is a term used in the field of medicine to describe the fibrous and fatty connective tissue that surrounds the uterus in the female pelvis.

Etymology

The term 'Parametrium' is derived from the Greek words 'para', meaning 'beside', and 'metra', meaning 'uterus'. Thus, it literally translates to 'beside the uterus'.

Anatomy

The Parametrium extends from the side of the uterus to the pelvic wall and the pelvic floor. It contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves that supply the uterus. The Parametrium is divided into three parts: the mesometrium, the mesosalpinx, and the mesovarium. These parts are named based on the structures they are associated with - the uterus, the fallopian tubes, and the ovaries, respectively.

Clinical Significance

In certain medical conditions such as cervical cancer, the extent of the disease can spread into the Parametrium. This is an important factor in staging the disease and planning treatment. The involvement of Parametrium often indicates a more advanced stage of the disease.
