Paranormal (/pærəˈnɔːrməl/) is a term used to describe events or phenomena that are beyond or contrary to what is scientifically understood or explainable. The term is derived from the Latin word 'para' meaning 'against, counter, outside' and 'normal' meaning 'conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected'.

Etymology

The term "paranormal" has been in the English language since at least 1920. It consists of two parts: 'para' and 'normal'. In most definitions of the word paranormal, it is described as anything that is beyond or contrary to what is deemed scientifically possible.
