Patrick O. Brown
Patrick O. Brown is an American biochemist and entrepreneur. He is best known for founding Impossible Foods, a company that develops plant-based substitutes for meat products. Brown is also a professor emeritus at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
Early Life and Education
Patrick O. Brown was born in Washington, D.C. He earned his B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Chicago and his M.D. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, San Francisco.
Academic Career
Brown joined the faculty at the Stanford University School of Medicine in 1988. His research focused on genomics and microarrays, and he was a pioneer in the development of DNA microarray technology. Brown's work has significantly contributed to the understanding of gene expression and genetic regulation.
Impossible Foods
In 2011, Brown took a sabbatical from Stanford University to focus on addressing the environmental impact of animal agriculture. He founded Impossible Foods with the goal of creating plant-based alternatives to meat that are both sustainable and delicious. The company's flagship product, the Impossible Burger, uses heme, a molecule found in plants and animals, to replicate the taste and texture of meat.
