Peter Throckmorton
Peter Throckmorton (1928–1990) was an American journalist, underwater archaeologist, and pioneer in underwater archaeology. He is best known for his work in the discovery and excavation of ancient shipwrecks and submerged ruins in the Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean Sea.
Early Life and Education
Peter Throckmorton was born in 1928 in New York City. He developed an interest in scuba diving and archaeology at a young age. He attended Harvard University, where he studied history and archaeology.
Career
Throckmorton began his career as a journalist, but his passion for underwater exploration led him to the field of underwater archaeology. He is credited with the discovery of several significant underwater archaeological sites, including the Shipwreck at Gelidonya and the Port of Heracleion.
In 1958, Throckmorton discovered the shipwreck at Gelidonya, a Bronze Age shipwreck off the coast of Turkey. This was the first ancient shipwreck to be excavated entirely on the seabed. The excavation of the Gelidonya shipwreck marked a significant milestone in the field of underwater archaeology, as it demonstrated that scientific archaeological methods could be applied underwater.
In the 1960s, Throckmorton was involved in the discovery and excavation of the Port of Heracleion, an ancient submerged city off the coast of Egypt. The city was a major port for trade between the Mediterranean and the Nile during the Pharaonic period.
Throckmorton also played a key role in the establishment of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA) at Texas A&M University. The INA is now one of the world's leading institutions for research in nautical and underwater archaeology.
Legacy
Peter Throckmorton's work has had a profound impact on the field of underwater archaeology. His discoveries have shed light on ancient maritime cultures and trade routes, and his methods have set the standard for underwater archaeological excavations.
