Pez
Pez is a brand of candy and a type of mechanical pocket dispenser. The candy itself takes the shape of small, rectangular blocks with a variety of flavors. The name "Pez" is derived from the German word for peppermint, "Pfefferminz," as the original Pez flavor was peppermint.
History
Pez was invented in Austria in 1927 by Eduard Haas III. Initially, it was marketed as a breath mint for adults. The first Pez dispensers, known as "regulars," were similar in shape to a cigarette lighter and were designed to encourage people to quit smoking.
In the 1950s, Pez began to be marketed as a children's candy, and the dispensers were redesigned to feature popular characters from cartoons, comics, and movies. This shift significantly increased the popularity of Pez, especially in the United States.
Dispenser Design
Pez dispensers are known for their unique and collectible designs. The top of the dispenser typically features a character's head, which can be tilted back to dispense the candy. Over the years, Pez has released dispensers featuring a wide range of characters, including Mickey Mouse, Batman, and Hello Kitty.
Collectibility
Pez dispensers have become highly collectible items. Some rare dispensers can fetch high prices among collectors. The Pez collecting community is active, with conventions and clubs dedicated to the hobby. The most valuable Pez dispensers are often those that were produced in limited quantities or feature unique designs.
Flavors
Pez candy is available in a variety of flavors, including fruit flavors like strawberry, cherry, and orange, as well as more unique flavors like cola and chocolate. The flavors available can vary by region and over time.
Cultural Impact
Pez has had a significant impact on popular culture. The brand has been featured in various television shows, movies, and books. It is often referenced as a nostalgic item and a symbol of childhood.
